Best of 2024

Another year and another list, more informed than many but less so than others and every bit as subjective.  In the end I find the exercise of cementing an order to the year’s “best” moments more and more helpful as time goes on.  If nothing else I’ll have a quick reference when (or if) memories start to fade, right?

Overall 2024 was a good one for me despite very little actual change.  Four “big” trips including one with family, plus the usual side quests for concerts and sports helped to break up a day-to-day that I truly do love.  Sure a few small issues cropped up along the way, but on the whole progress greatly outweighed any setbacks.

In terms of dining suffice it to say that oceanfront destinations are rarely for the epicure, though learning to drive on the opposite side of the road is far easier in Fiji than it is in London.  That noted, thanks to friends both new and old there was no shortage of great meals from Houston to Hong Kong whether on a beach, in a mall or along a lonely mountain road outside Florence.

I read a meme earlier this year that said “I don’t have a favorite place.  I have my favorite people.  And whenever I’m with my favorite people, it becomes my favorite place.”  I disagree.  I’d much rather eat solo at any of the places listed below than with friends at Applebee’s, but as the de facto organizer this is rarely an issue and I’m forever grateful that this little hobby now entering its 19th year has let me see so many great things and meet so many amazing people.

What follows is a list of the most memorable meals and bites over the last 365-days, many of them literally “the best” while others may have shined brighter than they normally would have due to the circumstances. Thanks to all the Chefs, GMs and Servers involved and equally as much to those who I was fortunate enough to break Bread with. As with last year, only one item per Restaurant in each category.

Shuttered in summer of 2022 but reopened in Wan Chai shortly thereafter Happy Cake Shop remains a local favorite for Cream Puff Pastries plus Hong Kong classics such as Egg Tarts and Pineapple Buns.

Now located at 68 Queen’s Road East, staff still making Puff Pastry with Lard to create an extra crispy texture, owner Wong Siu-ping can frequently be found present from 06h30 or earlier until the small shop closes past 20h30.

Also selling savory Buns, one filled with BBQ Pork larger and more generously stuffed than most, fans of Red Bean will find a sticky Pancake stuffed with it while those fancying Egg Tarts will find the Macau-style ones decent but bested by high-walled Cookie Crust versions with 50% more Custard.

Should one ever wonder what happens when a classically trained Swiss Baker settles down in Hong Kong the ideal outcome is that of Grégoire Michaud whose blue bags hang as proudly from the arms of tourists as those from Chanel or Hermes.

Trained in the Michelin starred kitchens of five-star hotels, his Sourdough operation turned Brick & Mortar in Wan Chai mid-2018, Michaud’s rise to fame can largely be attributable to rethinking the Macau-style Egg Tart with laminated Sourdough and an intensely eggy-center that is just barely set when warm.

Known for lengthy queues and copious selfies at the threshold, Christmas Day additionally found the team hawking Seasonal specials including soft Apple Pie Cookies, a punchy Irish Coffee Mont Blanc and sticky-sweet Salted Caramel Gingerbread Donuts best enjoyed while seated lest one fancy wearing it.

At one time the first Chinese Michelin 3* Restaurant, currently awarded two-stars, Lung King Heen resides on the 4th floor of Four Seasons Hong Kong with panoramic harbor views and the sort of service expected from a property serving some of Asia’s wealthiest persons.

Toqued by Chef Chan Yan Tak, a man with no formal culinary education who has been at the helm since 2002, Lung King Heen focuses on traditional Cantonese cuisine with globally sourced ingredients plus an extensive wine list and seasonal menus such as a holiday 9-course festive tasting complete with live caroling and instrumental arrangements.

Well regarded for Dim Sum Lunch, in particular Chef Chan’s Abalone Puff, Christmas Eve began with fragrant Red Jellyfish served alongside Honey-Barbecue Char Siu before an impeccable fried Crab perfumed by Onions and Black Truffles.

Trained as a graphic designer in New York City before culinary school in Bangkok Chef Vicky Lau originally opened TATE Dining Room in 2012, a move to the current location followed by her second Michelin Star for food that balances Chinese ideas with French technique.

Designed as “edible stories,” Lau’s concept following Chilean poet Pablo Neruda’s “All the Odes” collection, it is at leather-lined tables surrounded by a soft palate that diners are taken on a journey of memories with each plate focused on a single ingredient while balanced flavors and depth are matched to a tea pairing explained at length by the sommelier.

On this day a special 5-course holiday celebration, elegant Petits Salés followed by Custard reminiscing Century Egg in its idyllic form, the former recipient of the Asia’s Best Female Chef from w50b takes on Abalone alongside Pearl Barley with Pickles and Citrus accents that emphasize each flavor without hiding any of them.

Situated on the second floor, but seemingly miles from the Christmas bustle below, Breads accompany certain courses with housemade Spreads such as Sourdough to cleanse the palate between bites of an umami-laden Mushroom Tart with Black Truffle Sticky Rice.

Decidedly Chinese in a preparation of Peking Duck, crisp Skin and juicy Flesh alongside a bowl of dainty Wontons, Dessert seizes attention with taste, texture and presentation prior to finishing the meal with a Mignardises cart and a seasonal Cake should one have the foresight to pre-order.

Founded during the Qing Dynasty and owned by the Teochew family to this day a visit to Joy Hing’s Roasted Meat features recipes steeped in tradition, the move to Hennessy Road over forty years ago doing nothing to change the focus while Bib Gourmand recognition by Michelin has fueled long lines since 2016.

Considered Hong Kong’s best Restaurant for Char Siu, though the small kitchen also prides itself on various types of Poultry, and although the space itself suggests low expectations both Food and service are exceptional.

Defined as “continuity of prosperity,” a packed house just moments after opening on Christmas Eve suggesting truth to the name, Sour Plum Tea bottled by ownership proves an ideal partner to “Three Treasures” on top of Rice – the steamed Chicken in Soy soft and tender while both BBQ Pork and roast Duck see crispy Skin overlying complex spices and rendered Fat atop juicy Flesh.

Ta Vie 旅 means “Your Life” in French, “Journey” in Japanese, and with the ethos of both cultures in mind the Michelin 3* Restaurant from Chef Hideaki Sato focuses on premier ingredients prepared simply at the height of their season inside intimate confines.

Embattled during the pandemic, and now operating with only six employees from kitchen to hostess stand, guests are seated at posh tables surrounded by polished black and tile while staff attends to every need from carefully selected Teas to housemade Butter alongside piping-hot Bread.

Seasonal but not constrained by region, Chef Sato instead reaching to Japan, China and Europe for the best products available, December 23 offered only one menu beginning with premium Abalone atop tender Artichoke followed by hand-cut Pasta dressed by Seaweed Sauce and creamy Hokkaido Uni.

Served several dishes by Chef Sato himself, a buttered Leek supporting abundant Caviar revealed beneath char the first, Blue Lobster followed amidst Whelks and Burdock before a grand finale of Bresse Chicken liberally showered by White Truffles.

Paced appropriate to each diner, no lulls despite such a small staff, Hideaki emerged from the kitchen again to pour Champagne around his sugar-crystal “Pear” before rounding out the evening with complimentary sweet Tea, Strawberries with Pistachios and thick Chocolate Pudding kissed by Citrus.

Tucked away on the third floor of IFC Mall, the location poorly demarcated on Google Maps, Pierre Herme’s Hong Kong outpost focuses entirely on the legend’s iconic Macarons to the tune of roughly $6USD each and a minimum of four in a small tin.

Focused on all the classics plus a few seasonal specials suffice it to say the choice of Pierre Herme versus the competition is like choosing Vacheron Constatin over Rolex in that only the truly discerning will care, even though the difference in quality is evident.

Found on The Landmark Mandarin Oriental Hotel’s 7th floor Michelin 2 star and Green star Amber sees Dutch Chef Richard Ekkebus offering an elegant French menu entirely free of lactose amidst skyline views and a bright room featuring a sculpture made with 4,320 pieces of the Restaurant’s eponymous material.

Secluded from the bustling shops below with gilded accents, servers fluent in a multitude of languages catering to every detail of the experience, diners are invited to choose from various prix-fixe menus including a curtailed lunch to which some of Amber’s signatures can be added for a supplemental fee.

Sourcing Ingredients from only top producers, all of the Produce organic and plant-based alternatives to plastic contributing to sustainability efforts, amuse bouche sees Shiso Sorbet give way to fiery Kombucha and pickled Mussels fully awakening the palate for creamy Foie Gras Torchon kissed by Giseng spread atop Coconut Milk Viennoiserie.

Built out of former Buffet space, lanterns and hanging vines creating a vibe across spaces from bar to the back, it is with a truncated version of Chutima’s Northern Thai traditions that Lotus at Red Rock pays homage to the original with service more appropriate to Summerlin.

Requesting everything level five of ten, Thai Coffee and signature Riesling a prudent choice for those looking to quell the fire, Dinner began with hot Wonton Soup alongside Issan Sausage that is snappy, sour and worth every word of praise.

Not forgetting better-than-expected Egg Rolls or Nam Prik Ong teaming with Chilis, Vegetables and Pork Rinds used as delivery mechanisms, Garlic Crispy Prawns continue to earn “Mom’s Highlights” status with edible Shells still on and varying textures from bite to bite.

All in on Noodles and Curry, Beef Pad See Ew well executed but lost in the wake of two styles of fried Rice, any residual grains are well-utilized in sopping up the Sauce from Crispy Duck Chu-Chee or Panang Curry with medium rare Ribeye.

Second most recently launched at the corner of Rainbow and Warm Springs, an expansive footprint including the fast-paced kitchen open from 11:00am to 10:00pm daily, it is amidst flowers and medium woods that guests are invited to begin with Cocktails, Thai Tea or Coffee.

Referencing Isaan traditions and Thai Street-Food, items like golden packed with Chicken Curry decidedly the latter, Suweera’s ground duck with Herbs, Lime and Chili is a signature for good reason while Thai Beef Jerky is excellent with or without dipping Sauce.

Happier with Weera’s Spring Rolls than most Thai eateries, an item still best saved for the Vietnamese, if one were to choose a “must” amongst all Thonguthaisiri’s offerings the answer remains crunchy yet light deep-fried Papaya Salad served with Dressing on the side to preserve its texture.

Offering crispy Duck with an assortment of Rice and Noodles, its addition to traditional Pad Thai magnifying neither though both are good, Pad See Ew proves a bit sticky while Beef Panang Curry came loaded with Meat and a good bit of heat.

Previously offered for delivery or takeout only, but now brick and mortar at 6370 W Flamingo Rd #20, it was Tuesday that seventeen items were procured for tasting and shared by a group during workhours.

Never actually gone from the local food scene, the rebranding of Yonaka and Purple Potato followed by a consulting gig at LAS, Chef DeCastro’s current lineup continues with Croissant, Ring and Polvoron Bismarck Donuts, this day featuring a dozen varieties ranging from Pistachio to Salted Yema and several styles featuring Flan.

Also bringing back the Milky Cheese Roll for cooler weather, plus new items for each holiday, fans of things besides Donuts will be delighted to know Ramir recently added Ube Cheese Bars plus a Brownie that is thicker and better.

The only place in town for Ensaymada, traditional Cheese or Ube Cream, additional specials such as the Tres Leches Cake and Cookies sell out early for good reason even though the Buko Pie remains Purple Potato’s best item.

Tucked inside Suite 104 of a two-story complex on the corner of Arville Street and Spring Mountain Road, a ground floor flagship since day one, it is upon entry that eyes are immediately drawn to Chinese-born Chefs working inside the restaurant’s glass prep-room, and with Chef Jimmy Li’s time at 3 Villages, 1900 Asian Cuisine and Niu Gu well-known to fans the fact that everything on-site is made from scratch should come as no surprise.

Seating approximately 40 guests from 11:00am until 9:00pm seven-days-a-week it was with warm greetings that twelve items were received, many old favorites but some items not enjoyed in a while.

Affordable without skimping on Ingredients, all thanks to Chef Li and Joe Muscaglione’s dedication, a distinctive feel is ensured by the fact that almost every single item on-site is imported from or near Shanghai, and starting with Soup Dumplings, or XLB, fans will be happy to know ShangHai Taste’s set a high standard whether made with Pork, Shrimp, Crab or Beef.

Able to accommodate most dietary preferences, fried Soup Dumplings in two varieties a winner to all but vegans, those eschewing all Animal products will likely gravitate to green Dumplings, though even more interesting bites are found in the form of Cold Bean Curd Noodles slicked in Scallion Oil or sticky-sweet Wheat Gluten.

Built on family recipes handed down to Chef Li, his Fat Noodles with choice of Protein always a crowd-pleaser, Dumplings taste wonderful with or without spicy Oil or Soy while Fried Rice rivals the best in town.

Last visited for Dinner in July Saturday once again found Esther’s Kitchen firing on all cylinders, the frequently-changing menu expanded to match a more sizable space located just around the corner from James Trees’ revolutionary original address.

Now serving Las Vegas for nearly 7 years, every available superlative already used to describe James Trees’ Restaurant that revitalized the Art’s District, it was with a packed house that four guests sat near the bar with Baker Dylan Jobsz’s city-best Sourdough starting things off.

Seasonal and rustic in a good way, exacting standards and impeccable service forever part of Esther’s D.N.A., it was with a focus on new items that all-new Crudo with Calabrian Chilis went toe-to-toe with grilled Squash decorated by Brie and Greens.

Modifying Gnocco Frito for colder weather, light Dough fried and filled with airy Parmesan, new Entrees include earthy Lasagna quite different from Al Solito Posto plus spicy Sausage lent snappiness from the grill atop a sort of “Sausage & Peppers” Lentils setup.

Pasta-centric as always, classics still present but this day’s focus on items such as Mezzaluna akin to Mario Batali’s iconic “Pumpkin Lune,” suffice it to say that there are no wrong options whether its Casarecce with Crab and ‘Nduja or hand-cut Noodles in Madeira Cream that reminisces of idyllic Mushroom Soup.

Never forgetting Tree’s Polenta, though guests seeking something more hearty should consider a thick and juicy Pork Chop served alongside Beans, Dessert consisted of Esther’s forever refining Butterscotch Budino plus Chocolate Cake like a Klondike Bar and thick Basque Cheesecake.
